This profile is very basic and simply a template for Fern's character. Over the years she has been involved in role play and story building her character as well as her relationships with other characters has evolved in ways that I personally find hard to simply type on a small site I made back in 2003. However I'll do my best to list the characteristics that have stayed more or less the same over time.

Physical Appearance
When I first envisioned Fern I wanted her to be a very petite sort of character that could pack quite a punch. While short in stature and frame, Fern was initially a character I wanted to make as a magic powerhouse to use during AOL RP because back in the day when I first created her there weren't many people who role played such characters in Zelda chatrooms. So I wanted to do something about it! I also wanted Fern to look both a bit outrageous in style as well as bold in her attire; I have no old artwork of Fern's very first costume but it was rather different than what she is currently designed in.

In any case, Fern has gone through a certain level of redesign but the key aspects of her 'look' have remained the same. She was always short, no greater than 5'0" in height and with long hair paired with her braids that extend from the front of her face towards the back of the head. Her eyes I decided would be gray since I never saw any characters with such eyes in a Zelda game before, I thought it would be unique enough for someone like her. Fern wasn't spared what I like to call my "headband fetish" and was given one that was red with a large gold triforce motif (other characters of mine sport some sort of head gear, a costume aspect I personally love), which was supposed to serve as some sort of signifigance to her background story. I also love capes and cloaks, another aspect that has stayed with Fern as well; the gemmed brooch that is fixed to it was intially a pendant I wanted her to wear but through artwork done by various artists the pendant was eventually morphed into a brooch (the color of it has stayed the same for the most part). The leggings (or tights as I sometimes refer to them) were not always white! In fact, her first design had them to be a light purple color that matched more with her other clothing, but in the end I didn't like the way it looked in my head so I switched the color to white. The shorts have always been with Fern as well, not necessarily as the blue, but the fit and shape have stayed.

One of the most variant parts of Fern as a character was her age; I could never settle for a number that satisfied me. Initially she was around 15 years old...can anyone see a trend here perhaps? My oldest fan-creation, Mandy, was also a 15 year old as well as a magic user and archer. I can't help but admit that both Fern and Mandy are inspired by Lina Inverse, the lead character of a series called Slayers (and was ALSO 15 years old at the start of the series!) but so be it. A great source of creativity during my teen years was anime and manga and I found a lot of love in strong female characters like Lina Inverse of Slayers fame. Back to Fern though, it didn't take too long to consider than 15 was too young for her so I bumped up her age to around 17/18 years old for general Zelda role play, an improvement in my book. Storylines have allowed for Fern to be altered in this regard but her exact age isn't particularly a very important part of her character.

Fern has never had any weapons to call her own...no staves, swords, daggers, none of the typical caster-type weaponry often seen in video games and in other fantasy story mediums. I figured that since my first character has a bow and arrow I would make Fern a bit different and exclude any sort of weapons; this proved to be rather challenging to role play, if you can imagine. Without any weapons Fern's magic is her only offense and defense...were it to fail she'd be completely vunerable. This adds to her character however and forced me to learn what it was like to play a character without any sort of martial training in weapon combat. So far I don't plan on giving Fern any sort of advantage in this area due to her body type and size.

Personality
In a nutshell, to describe Fern would be like describing a sterotypical cat: aloof, independant, picky and stubborn. But, as we all know, cats don't talk...at least not in a way we can understand. Fern is also known to be exceptionally loyal to a fault and understands the difficulty that can sometimes arise when loyalties and duty collide. She's also a bit bookish and enjoys reading but only on specific topics such as geography, history, and of course magic and the mythology therein. Fern is a particularly quiet individual when not in the company of others and enjoys the silence that solitude can bring. However, Fern has learned the value of friendship and company. Another noticable trait Fern possesses is a remarkable temper that when provoked can gather up quite a punch (with her magic, that is!) and is known among her friends that, while she can be rather pugnacious, she only reacts as such when pushed the wrong way. Otherwise Fern is particularly level-headed, calculating and sometimes quite sassy.

Background
Fern's old backstory used to be in the section of the site but, after reading it years later I ended up disliking it so it has since been scrapped. Why this is is because, in all honesty, when role playing a specific story with a character it's a bit difficult to retain a backstory that may or may not fit with a role play. Thus, while keeping Fern's basic traits in tact, her story remained fluid throughout the years I have played her.

Originally, Fern was to be some sort of child of destiny, similar in that respect to Link and Zelda but for a different purpose and a different group of people to the north of Hyrule in a province called Ildilay, a land of my creation. Fern had all the signs to indicate that she was so important and special: allignments of celestial bodies, the snatching of her as a child, the murder of her mother...the works! While part of these aspects have remained with Fern I have tweeked her story so that she doesn't come off as terribly extravagant in her own backstory and has a more realistic and humble beginning. Over the years what has remained the same is Fern's conception by her parents and where and by whom she was raised. The basis of her story lies in the foundation that Fern as child was trained in the ways of dark magics for the intent and purposes of her adoptive mothers that took her as a child. The details of how she came to be in this situation and environment have always varied from story to story but the outcome is the same: Fern eventually flees despite her fears, her caretakers pursue her, and eventually she escapes and vows to never share her knowledge to anyone. From here the basis of Fern's magical powers come from elemental sources such as fire, water, wind and so on. Depending on the storyline Fern has even shown ability to channel Light power but from where or how she has learned such spells is unknown. The final transition of Fern leaving her old life behind in Ildilay is the way she discards her old name, Ahlis, in favor of her most commonly used alias: Fern. I have never truly role played a story where Fern's old life comes back to haunt her; for the sake of simplicity I basically declared Fern as fully out of reach from her pursuers when beginning new storylines so to avoid any complications or contradictions.

In the Present...
For more current happenings of Fern I am using her in a new role play storyline for the first time in about three or so years! Please visit Fragments of Memories which is the incomplete, but in the works, website for the new storyline.
